I didn’t notice for a long time, but I am freelancing for 18 years now. My first job was to create a website for my neighbor, which was a electrician. This was in 1999 and I was 12 years old.
After getting proper design education, working with several agencies and co-founding a recruitment startup I went freelance full time three years ago. I was surprised how easy it was to make a decent income for me and my family. Some friends and colleagues struggled and I wondered why. The business side came just naturally to me. Not that it was very hard sometimes, but I always knew what I had to do.
There are some great communities I like to introduce, which helped me to understand, what problems Freelancers go through. One is Millo, which has great resources but also a closed Facebook group, which has discussions about everything around design and freelancing. I also love to hang on my couch and watch some videos from Business of Design.
